Stem Cell-Based Augmentation: A Novel Approach

Long-term success of dental implants has been demonstrated when placed simultaneously with, or after augmentation procedures. However, optimal bone formation can take from 6 to 9 months, or longer, with grafting materials other than autogenous bone. For this reason, there is interest in any surgical technique that can avoid autogenous bone harvesting, yet result in sufficient bone formation within a relatively short time frame. This presentation will highlight recent cellular and molecular advances in bone grafting technology that have led to techniques utilizing stem cells, as well as growth and differentiation factors. How and when these technologies may be used will be discussed and compared with conventional techniques. The high percentage of vital bone content, which is achieved with stem cell grafting after a relatively short healing phase, can result in a more rapid initiation of implant placement.

Dr. Aron Gonshor is a Maxillofacial Surgeon, practicing in Montreal, Canada, with a PhD in Neurophysiology and Maxillofacial specialty from McGill University.

He has published extensively on implant therapy, PRP, Bone grafting and related topics, and is presently heading the Clinical Advisory Board for Ace Surgical Supply Co. He has lectured throughout North and South America, Europe and the Far East, covering topics related to implant rehabilitation, PRP therapy and wound care, as well as bone graft reconstruction. His most recent work is on Stem Cell-enhanced grafting.

A past president of the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, he is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentistry and served for 10 years as a director of the Academy of Osseointegration.
